NATASHA WRIGHT
Hello Next Up Collector Community!
I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to Natasha Wright. I found Natasha’s works while on Instagram, and I have to be honest, I feel beyond lucky to have come across them. She uses the most rich and luxurious tones of neutrals, and occasionally metallic pigments, while juxtaposing lines, shapes, and patterns. It is easy to tell her muse comes from powerful female energy by first glance, but her works span a range of topics, figures, and elements.
Natasha writes that she draws her inspiration from “the politics of the representation of the female form. Gender, sexuality, vulnerability and power, seduction and aggression - these dualities motivate the dynamics of my work.” She cites references such as “The Venus of Willendorf, Mary Magdalena, The Three Graces and Cardi B [as] some of [her] many muses.”
Further, she states: “The women I paint balance the grotesque and beautiful. They are not naive to the history and male subjectivity they inherit. They claim their space to discover who they are on their own terms.” I already loved Natasha’s works upon first glance, but I do have to say her inspiration, focus, and intentions only further contribute to my respect for the works.
Natasha is from New Zealand, but is based out of New York City, and has exhibited in the United States and internationally. Her work has also been featured in Hyperallergic, Art Critical, Two Coats of Paint, Harper’s Bazaar, Fashion Quarterly and The New Zealand Herald. In 2018 Natasha’s solo show “Les Biches” was named as one of the five best exhibitions in NYC by Harper’s Bazaar, as cited on her website.
