Advice For Next Generation Collectors - From Artists

Work by Eva Jablonsky

Not sure where to begin, but interested in collecting art, or at least, becoming more well-versed in all things contemporary art? Here are some of the key advice takeaways artists themselves want you to know!

I would encourage buyers to follow their gut and seek art that they enjoy, the weird stuff they are attracted to even if it’s not on trend or something they would see in magazines or other peoples homes. Art can tell a personal story about the owner of it as well as the artist and to be able to support your own vision as well as the creators profession is what will keep art interesting for generations to come.

“If you want to collect art for the sake of art, I would advise to only buy what you like, namely intuitively! Buy art, which either caught your attention immediately or aroused your interest when you looked a second time. It should have an effect on you. In terms of the interior - I would pay attention to whether it is not a painting that you see in a similar form at other artists. It should be something unique, because that can eventually make it visually boring if you later often see other works that are very similar to your own. Pay attention to how the artist works and how he/she presents his/her work.”

“Look around in galleries, art fairs and graduation shows. Avoid commercial galleries and buy what you like yourself.”

Buy things you really love, not because somebody told you to like them or you feel like you should like them.

Buying and collecting original artwork for the first time is an exciting (and perhaps daunting) endeavor! My suggestions for young collectors just starting out are to first figure out what they like - what speaks to them.

This can easily be done by simply scrolling through Instagram, but it’s even better to see work in person when possible. Contemporary Art galleries, museums and art fairs are great places to take in a lot of different kinds of artwork. Don’t feel shy about asking them about their work - most like to explain their process and/or inspiration and ideas behind the work.

If you can find emerging artists at shows or online, their price point is often very affordable - and if you love their work, you may even grow your collection alongside them as they also develop.

Above all, but what you love and have fun! Take a chance!
